SungHong Min¡¯s diaristic installation of both images and sound physically transforms and uniquely stands as a direct referent of his experience and emotions of everyday life. Preoccupied foremost with the relationships between image, sound and the process of production, Min¡¯s installation reveals this transformation as a function of its pictorial language of repetition.
The image of a body¡¯s movement found within the installation is created, like a personal diary or journal entry, through the physical process of breathing charcoal powder onto photographic paper. Min has created 340 such images that capture his breath, each representing a single moment during a 17 minute, 52 second interval. These repetitive spectral images work together in a fashion not unlike human language. Taken as a whole, the images form a collision of visual images, which in itself holds a symbolic (as well as a specific) sense of nature.
Broken down to a technical narrative, the gesture traces a line through the inside of the artist¡¯s body, outside into his environment. The sound of Min¡¯s extended breathing collides with the texture of the image, the resulting tension of which invites one¡¯s conceptual imagination into a space which is only partially metaphorical. Additionally, Min will exhibit a small installation in the project room, with works composed of rust on paper ? another element in Min¡¯s practice which deals both with transformation over time, and the imprint of gesture produced by one¡¯s body.
Sung Hong Min is a San Francisco-based artist. He received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, and was the Murphy Fellowship in the Fine Arts recipient from the San Francisco Foundation. In 2004, he was an artist-in-residency at Montana Artists Refuge. This is Sunghong Min¡¯s second exhibition with Sabina Lee Gallery.
