"Viewfinder" is, an exhibition showcasing the work of seven artists living and working in Los Angeles. Viewfinder seeks to investigate the continued relevance of
landscape in current art making and the ways in which the genre is bent or
manipulated to reveal meanings particular to our time. Featured are the bleary, deja vu visions of Miami in the photographs of Peter Lograsso, an ominous Southern Gothic forest in photography by Heather Cantrell, the foggy surveillance wizardry in the multi-media works of Sean Higgins, the use of a pinhole camera to reveal a darker side of Malibu in the photographs of Stuart Gow, and an even darker comment on Malibu through the quasi-pornographic puffery of cash hungry realtors in the hanging globe by Russell Crotty. Rounding out the exhibition, Matt Polish¡¯s short film ¡°Had Some Time¡± uses rugged Montana landscape to articulate a elderly man¡¯s suicide, and the long lost days of a sunnier Southern California are brought forth in the dusty, smoggy sea- and city-scapes of Jason David. Viewfinder was organized by local artist Christopher Pate, whose previous curatorial efforts include Tripindicular at Lemon Sky, Los Angeles, CA in 1999 and Rogue Wave at LA Louver, Venice, CA in 2001.
