February 19 - March 26 2011
Opening Reception - February 19 - 6 to 10 pm
Sabina Lee Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works by Drew Peterson. This show presents a collection of complex screenprints depicting appropriated illustrations used in early 20thcentury advertisements. These illustrations are composed of design motifs, pictorial narratives, and representations of everyday objects. The meticulously drafted images communicate an aesthetic immediacy yet never exceed its quotidian, commercial origin. Peterson utilizes a process of digital manipulation, fragmentation, and distortion of scale to recontextualize archaic imagery as new agents of contemporary visual culture. In doing so he pushes his source material to psychedelic breaking point. Through composition and a daring use of color, Peterson removes the line drawings and wood engravings from the static history of print media and projects onto them the agitation and pleasure that we find in our current visual climate. In Peterson’s work we see the Sears Roebuck catalog become Amazon, Ebay and iTunes. Peterson draws our attention to accelerated consumerism, visually spiraling out of control in front of us.
Drew Peterson lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied art at the San Francisco Art Institute and returned to Minneapolis to complete his BFA at the University of Minnesota. At both schools, he studied traditional and contemporary printmaking processes while integrating other studio practices including drawing and painting. He has curated numerous exhibitions and is the recipient of the Jacob Lawrence & Gwendolyn Knight Award and the Max & Zelda Berman Scholarship at the University of Minnesota. In 2008, Peterson attended the Yale Summer School of Art in Norfolk, Connecticut. In the fall of 2009, Peterson was the emerging artist in residence for printmaking at the Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snow Mass, Colorado. Peterson is an assistant printer at Highpoint Center for Printmaking in Minneapolis, MN.
The exhibition will be on view from February 19 to March 26 , 2011.
